James J. Treat Scholarship

The James J. Treat Scholarship is established to honor the legacy of James J. Treat, a distinguished figure in the nondestructive testing (NDT) field. This scholarship is dedicated to supporting students who are pursuing education and careers in NDT. By providing financial assistance, the James J. Treat Scholarship aims to empower students to excel in their academic endeavors and contribute to the future of the NDT industry.

Form of Award

The scholarship is $10,000. Up to one scholarship awarded each year.
Funds will be paid to individuals on 1 July of the current year.

Eligibility

The James J. Treat scholarship is a cash award that provides an incentive to undergraduate students enrolled in nondestructive testing (NDT) education courses at any US-accredited college or university.

Selection

The ASNT Foundation’s Board of Trustees will review each application.

Requirements

After finishing training coursework, scholarship recipients are required to submit a written report covering the following key points:

  • Course Overview: Briefly describe the topics covered in the education coursework. Highlight any specific modules or subjects that stood out to you.

  • Key Learnings: Outline the main concepts, skills, or knowledge you gained during the coursework. Share any real-world applications or scenarios where you can apply what you've learned.

  • Academic and Professional Growth: Outline the academic and professional skills you have developed during the education coursework. Discuss how these skills align with your academic and career goals.

  • Scholarship Impact: Share how the scholarship has contributed to your ability to participate in the education coursework.

Application

  • Applicants must submit an original essay (minimum of 500 words) summarizing any previous training or education in NDT, future career goals, and how the scholarship will provide an advantage to further career development.

  • Applicants must provide the name of the school, college, or university where the education will be completed.

  • Applicants must provide a brief description of coursework the individual is contemplating enrolling in or is enrolled in.

  • Applicants must provide the month and year when they intend to begin coursework.

  • Applicants must provide the month and year when they expect coursework will be completed.
